The Iron Men of Wantage

Rose Kinch was born in Wantage, Berkshire in 1886. In 1911 she was living with her father and paternal grandmother in Camberwell. Harry Kench was an army pensioner and storekeeper. When he was a lad, his own father, Benjamin, was a smith in an ironworks. Harry would later become a smiths striker in a foundry – suggesting that father and son worked together. Another son, Arthur, also worked as a smiths striker. Nalder & Nalder were in business at nearby Challow Iron Works manufacturing agricultural machinery – perhaps this is where the men worked.
