Elizabeth and Arnold Vickers married in 1931. Although
Elizabeth Ilett was born in Chard, Somerset, her family were at the address on
the card in earlier records running a lodging house (as did Elizabeth and Arnold).
Arnold was born in Derbyshire in 1872, but in 1911 he was in West Ham working
as a grocer and living with his first wife, Mary, and their children. Ten years
earlier, the family were in Dudley where Arnold was also a grocer. Although
Arnold’s father was a farmer, he and at least one brother decided that
shopkeeping was the career for them, and he appears with his brother, Rowland,
in the 1891 census working in Rowland’s business in Bedford.
